JAPN 301: Advanced Japanese Language, Culture, and Communication
MLO 1: Upper Division Language and Communication course taught in Japanese
Course Description:
This course further continues development of advanced proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge through content-based instruction. Taught in Japanese.
Course Reflective Narrative:
In the semester of Fall 2013, I took JAPN 301: Advanced Japanese Language Culture and Communication. This class aims to fulfill the first major learning outcome: language and communication. The Japanese classes before this were teaching and enforcing the basic structure of the Japanese language. While this class continued this trend, we also began learning more practical Japanese. In other words, instead of going over worksheets and grammar points all class, we also read articles and stories in Japanese; we began going in depth into the differences between formal speaking and informal speaking; and we had to conduct a research project concerning Japanese culture and present our findings in Japanese. These assignments helped our understanding of the different types of Japanese (spoken vs. written; formal vs. informal) and when to use them. This understanding helped us to progress along our fulfillment of the first major learning outcome.
The work done in this class that stuck with me the most was the final research project. One of the purposes of this course was to fulfill MLO 1, and I believe this project did so the most successfully. We were required to take what we learned from English sources and efficiently convey that information in the form of not only an essay written in Japanese, but a PowerPoint presentation as well. What was learned from this project not only helped further my understanding of the Japanese language, but also helped sharpen my presentation skills and my Japanese essay writing skills for future research projects, such as Capstone.
