JAPN 404: Advanced Presentational Communication
MLO 4: Research Methods and Information Technology
Course Description:
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral presentations and developing research papers to present in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese.
Course Reflective Narrative:
This course aimed to develop primarily three skills to help students successfully complete their Capstone projects. First, oral proficiency when speaking Japanese, primarily through presentations. Second, we developed our proficiency in writing Japanese papers, ensuring we used correct grammar styles, correct vocabulary, as well as proper format. Third, we developed our understanding of how to effectively use presentation technologies, such as Google Drive, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Throughout the semester we improved our understanding of these different points and applied that understanding towards our Capstone research projects. We conducted background research on our topics, using various research tools, such as databases (JSTOR), government websites (U.S. Statistics Bureau), and the library. We then carried out our own research in form of surveys, created using Google Forms. After receiving a sufficient number of replies, we began to analyze the results, creating graphs and tables in Excel to show the most important findings. Once that was done, we created presentations in both English and Japanese, either using Google Slides or PowerPoint, to present our background research and our own research findings. Finally, we summarized our findings and analysis in an essay, written in both Japanese and English.
This long, arduous process taught me a vast array of skills, such how to best research a topic, how to best conduct my own research, how to analyze the findings, and how to effectively present all of the information to others.
